JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Jacksonville University started its men’s basketball season in a hurry Monday night, piling up 105 points in a 105-61 home win over Trinity at Swisher Gymnasium.

The Dolphins led 52-27 at halftime and scored 53 more after the break. A crowd of 876 watched the 7 p.m. opener.

Jacksonville took control early with hot shooting. The Dolphins made 22 of their 38 shots in the first half, including seven 3-pointers, while Trinity managed just seven field goals on 30 tries before the break. The second half went much the same way, with Jacksonville going 22 of 36 from the field.

Jamie Phillips Jr. led Jacksonville with 18 points on 7-of-11 shooting, hitting two of his six tries from 3-point range. Nehemiah Turner came off the bench for 16 points and three blocked shots. James Morrow made five of his seven shots for 12 points and swatted five shots of his own.

The numbers were lopsided across the board. Jacksonville made 44 of 74 shots from the floor, out-rebounded Trinity 50-17 and handed out 30 assists. Trinity hit 18 of 63 attempts. The Dolphins also blocked 10 shots and made 12 of their 32 tries from beyond the arc.

Trinity got 15 points from George Woods and 12 from Sherrard Adams. The visitors kept it from getting even wider at the foul line, where they made 16 of 22, while Jacksonville attempted only eight free throws all night and made five.

Turner was efficient in his minutes, going 7 of 9 from the floor, and Morrow added two 3-pointers on three attempts.

The win puts the Dolphins at 1-0 heading into the rest of their nonconference schedule. Jacksonville is next at home against Paine on Monday.
