Western Kentucky’s Women’s Golf Team Celebrates Historic Win at UNF Collegiate

Jacksonville, Florida – A sunny day on March 4, 2025, turned out to be a memorable milestone for the Western Kentucky University (WKU) women’s golf team as they accomplished something truly special at the UNF Collegiate hosted at the Jacksonville Golf & Country Club. The Lady Tops showed off their skills, finishing with a team score of 28-over par 892, securing a fantastic victory by a margin of nine shots over second-place Xavier, who finished at 901 (+37).

A Historic Start to Spring

This win marks the second victory in a row for the Lady Tops, indicating they are on a roll as they kick off the spring season. Never before in the program’s history has WKU snagged two tournament wins in the spring. The excitement does not stop there – this triumph is also the 13th career victory for head coach Adam Gary, extending his school record even further.

Ranked No. 69, WKU outperformed some stiff competition, besting six other top-100 programs in a competitive 16-team field. This season has already proven to be a noteworthy one, as it’s the third time coach Gary’s women have pulled off two wins in a season – following similar successes in the 2023-24 and 2014-15 seasons. In fact, this achievement marks just the fifth time in the program’s history that they’ve reached this milestone, previously done in 2014-15, 2002-03, and 1981-82.

Standout Performances

The team’s triumph was driven by impressive individual performances, with Sydney Hackett and Averi Cline leading the charge. Hackett finished tied for third place while Cline placed eighth. Julia Zigrossi also made waves, achieving her best finish at WKU by tying for 14th. The numbers tell the story of their dominance: the team excelled particularly in par 4-scoring, finishing at +37, and par 5-scoring, where they posted an impressive -5. This sharp play under pressure is a clear indicator of their determination and skill on the greens.

WKU’s performance also shone when looking at birdies; they tallied a total of 33 birdies during the tournament, with only one school recording more. Their consistency was seen in their 157 pars, tying for the third-most of the event. Individual statistics were equally impressive, as Hackett tied for second in par 4-scoring and made a mark as tied for fourth in par 5-scoring. Cline also made her presence known, being tied for fourth in par 4-scoring.

The Road Ahead

As the excitement from this historic win begins to settle, the Lady Tops are gearing up for their next challenge. They will be hosting the Spring Break Shootout at Lake Jovita Golf Club, located in Dade City, Florida, on March 17-18. With their current momentum driving them forward, fans and team members alike are eagerly anticipating what this next tournament holds for WKU.

This victory at the UNF Collegiate has undoubtedly put WKU’s women’s golf team in the spotlight, showcasing their talent, hard work, and determination. With the season ahead, it will be thrilling to see how far these remarkable athletes can go. Here’s to more birdies, pars, and unforgettable moments on the green!
