News Summary
Walmart is set to install electric vehicle chargers at three Supercenters in Jacksonville, investing $1.3 million at each location. This initiative aims to enhance EV infrastructure and provide greater access to charging options for customers. The chargers are currently under city review for necessary permits and are part of Walmart’s broader project to create a nationwide fast-charging network by 2030. Additional EV charging stations are also expected at a Walmart Neighborhood Market in Fruit Cove, further expanding the charging options in the region.
Jacksonville is set to see the installation of electric vehicle (EV) chargers at three Walmart Supercenters as part of a significant move towards enhancing EV infrastructure in the area. Walmart is investing $1.3 million at each location for the installations, which are currently undergoing a city review for necessary permits. These chargers will be available to customers, contributing to the growing network of charging options in the region.
The three Supercenters scheduled for EV charger installations are strategically located in South and West Jacksonville:
- 11900 Atlantic Blvd., located in the East Arlington/Sandalwood area near Kernan and Atlantic boulevards.
- 10251 Shops Lane, situated at the intersection of Interstate 95 and Philips Highway, in proximity to the Avenues mall area.
- 6830 Normandy Blvd., located east of I-295.
Walmart has partnered with Bowman Consulting Group Ltd. from Alpharetta, Georgia, to oversee the civil engineering aspects of the project. This partnership will address the modification of existing parking spaces into dedicated EV stalls while also facilitating the installation of necessary chargers, transformers, and signage.
The initiative is part of Walmart’s broader plan, announced in April 2023, to create a fast-charging network for electric vehicles at thousands of Walmart and Sam’s Club locations nationwide by 2030. The chain previously reported having nearly 1,300 EV fast-charging stations across more than 280 locations as of the announcement. This expansion aims to make EV ownership more feasible and convenient, especially in rural, suburban, and urban communities, given Walmart’s establishment within reachable distance for 90% of U.S. residents.
Walmart has already launched three pilot EV charging stations, located in Texas and Arkansas, as of April 30, 2025. Plans for further growth include the addition of more charging stations for customer use. Each charging session will require users to download the Walmart app, scan a QR code on the station, and then plug in their vehicle to charge while shopping.
In addition to the Supercenters in Jacksonville, a Walmart Neighborhood Market in Fruit Cove is also expecting to feature an EV charging station. This location will be equipped with four charging units, each with two chargers. A permit application for this charging station was submitted on April 23 and is currently under review by St. Johns County. The meeting to discuss the application will take place on May 7, and the Fruit Cove store is located at 445 Florida 13 within the Julington Square shopping center, with no existing gas station on the premises.
The enhancements brought about by Walmart’s new charging stations will introduce additional options to existing third-party charging solutions. Walmart’s electrical consulting partner, Bowman Consulting Group, has a history of providing significant consulting services valued at over $56 million for various Walmart projects across the country, including those aimed at improving electric infrastructure.
This push towards EV charging infrastructure aligns with other companies, such as Costco, which has also announced plans to install DC fast-charging stations at several locations in collaboration with Electrify America. This partnership will expand charging options across multiple states, including Florida, Colorado, and California.
Ultimately, the expansion of electric vehicle charging stations at Walmart Supercenters and other locations aims to meet the growing demand for EVs and encourage sustainable transportation choices, significantly impacting the automobile landscape in Jacksonville and beyond.
