OXFORD, Alabama – The University of North Alabama (UNA) softball team concluded its 2025 season at the Atlantic Sun Conference Championship held on May 6, 2025. In a single elimination game at Choccolocco Park, the Lions faced the No. 8 seed Jacksonville Dolphins and suffered a significant defeat, losing by a score of 6-1.
With this loss, UNA finished the season with a record of 30 wins and 21 losses, marking 13 consecutive years without a losing season. Over this stretch, the Lions recorded a winning record in 12 seasons, with only one year (2021) ending in a .500 record. Since their entry into the Atlantic Sun Conference in 2019, the Lions have achieved a 7-11 record in ASUN tournament games.
Jacksonville ended the match with a season record of 23 wins and 26 losses. The Dolphins built a commanding lead early in the game, scoring four runs in the second and third innings combined, before adding an unearned run in the fifth. The Lions managed to put a point on the board in the sixth inning, thanks to Laura Leigh Wheeler, who hit an RBI double that brought in leadoff hitter Gyvan Hammons.
Despite the momentum from Wheeler’s double, the Lions were unable to capitalize fully. They loaded the bases in the same inning with hopes of tying the game; however, the rally was cut short by a groundout at third base. Jacksonville reinforced their lead by scoring another run in the bottom of the sixth inning, which finalized the score at 6-1.
In terms of batting, UNA recorded a total of six hits throughout the game, with senior Ryleigh Boyett leading with two hits. Hammons, Wheeler, sophomore Briley Dover, and junior Caroline Cartron each contributed one hit to the team’s total. Individual achievements stood out as senior Hailey Jones wrapped up her collegiate career reaching impressive milestones. She completed the season with a career-best batting average of .381, tallying 67 hits. Notably, Jones tied the school record for at-bats at 713 and established herself as the career record holder for doubles at UNA, amassing a total of 56.
In the pitching matchup, Skylar Waggoner emerged as the winning pitcher for Jacksonville, improving her record to 8-9 for the season. On the other hand, Alivia Wilken took the loss for UNA, concluding her record at 12-8.
The conclusion of the 2025 season marks another chapter in the history of UNA softball, as they look toward future seasons aiming to build upon their successes and strive for better outcomes in conference play. The team’s consistent performance over the years speaks volumes about their dedication and competitiveness in college softball.
