Athletes showcase their talents at the Class 1A State Track & Field Meet in Jacksonville.
Sam Alexis Woods, daughter of golf champion Tiger Woods, qualified for four events at the Florida High School Athletic Association Class 1A State Track & Field Meet in Jacksonville. As a senior at the Benjamin School, she demonstrated her skills in the hurdles and relays. The talented track team celebrated a team victory, securing the 1A title while showcasing their journey in sports and academics.
The excitement is palpable in Jacksonville, Florida, as high school athletes prepare for one of the biggest events of the year: the Florida High School Athletic Association Class 1A State Track & Field Meet. Among those athletes is Sam Alexis Woods, daughter of renowned golf champion Tiger Woods, who has impressively qualified for not one, but four events at this year’s meet, taking place on Saturday, May 10, at the University of North Florida’s Hodges Stadium.
Sam, a senior at the Benjamin School, is out to prove her mettle on the track. She will be showcasing her skills in both the 100-meter and 400-meter hurdles, while also having the potential to shine in the girls’ 4×400 and 4×800 relay events. Currently, she is seeded 13th in the 100-meter hurdles and 18th in the 400-meter hurdles.
Sam’s dedication and hard work shine through her achievements, particularly as part of the Benjamin School’s top-notch 4×400 relay team, which is currently seeded 4th! With 18 talented girls from the Benjamin Buccaneers girls’ track team qualifying for state, their chances of bringing home the 1A team title look promising. This excitement is amplified by the presence of other local teams from Palm Beach County, such as Boca Raton Christian and Jupiter Christian, also vying for the title.
Sam had the privilege of being part of the Benjamin’s recent success as members of the state championship soccer team that triumphed in March. With support from both Tiger Woods and Elin Nordegren at various sporting events, it’s clear Sam’s family is her biggest cheer squad.
As her big day at the track approaches, it’s easy to overlook the larger context. Sam is competing less than 12 years and just nine miles from a pivotal event in her father’s career, when he clinched his second title at the 2013 Players Championship. It’s moments like these that connect history and legacy in a very special way.
While Sam is charting her own path in sports, she has made it clear that she wishes to avoid pursuing professional golf. She intends to focus on her strengths in soccer and track while spending more quality time with her father. After graduation, she has her sights set on attending Stanford University, a testament to her academic excellence and ambition.
Not only is Sam an impressive athlete, but her younger brother, Charlie Axel Woods, is also making a name for himself at the Benjamin School, particularly after helping his varsity golf team snag a state title during his freshman year. Together, Sam and Charlie are building quite the athletic legacy for their family.
Sam’s day at the Class 1A meet was action-packed as she showcased her talents in various events. She ran an exhilarating leg in the Buccaneers’ 4×800 relay team, which captured a strong second place with a time of 9:32.40, shortly behind the winning team from Providence School. The 4×400 relay team where she also contributed finished fourth with a time of 4:01.83. In individual events, she clinched 17th place in the finals for the 100-meter hurdles and 20th in the 400-meter hurdles, showcasing resilience and determination amidst fierce competition.
In a thrilling finish to the meet, the Benjamin Buccaneers’ track team tallied an impressive 61 points, outpacing their competitors to secure the 1A team title by 16 points over Tallahassee Maclay. This victory adds another feather to the Woods family cap.
