Professional golfer using unique 3D-printed golf clubs on the practice range

News Summary

PGA Professional Joe Ferguson recently undertook a unique challenge by using Bryson DeChambeau’s bespoke golf clubs in a professional tournament. Utilizing a rare backup set of 3D-printed, one-length irons from Avoda Golf, Ferguson navigated the challenges and benefits that the unusual setup presented. His journey explores high grip diameters, club performance, and enhanced accuracy, culminating in a newfound respect for DeChambeau’s innovations in the golf world. Fans can catch the highlights on the Golf Monthly YouTube channel.

Professional Golfer Attempts Unique Club Experiment

In a recent adventure, PGA Professional Joe Ferguson took on an exciting challenge: he set out to recreate the golf club set made famous by the talented Bryson DeChambeau. Ferguson’s goal was to play in a professional tournament while using DeChambeau’s renowned clubs, all for a special feature on a popular YouTube channel dedicated to golf enthusiasts.

The Unique Clubs

Thanks to the innovative folks at Avoda Golf, Ferguson got his hands on something truly special: DeChambeau’s *backup set* of bespoke, 3D-printed, one-length irons, known for their unique curved faces. There are only two sets of these special Avoda irons in existence– one is with DeChambeau, and the other is now in Ferguson’s grasp. Talk about a rare opportunity!

Starting with the Lob Wedge

Ferguson kicked off his experience by giving the 60˚ lob wedge a spin during a practice session. This club measures 37.5 inches in length, matching the rest of the irons in the set, making it a *strange fit* for the PGA Pro, who traditionally uses longer clubs. It was a bit of a rocky start since this new setup felt unusual and out of his comfort zone.

DeChambeau typically swings custom Ping Glide 4.0 wedges that meet specific weight requirements, but those weren’t available to Ferguson. Instead, Avoda Golf supplied him with wedges designed to be compatible with the rest of the one-length iron set.

The Grips and Weight Challenge

Ferguson also discovered that the grips on DeChambeau’s clubs are an adventure in their own right. The Jumbo Max Tour Series XL grips pack a hefty diameter of 1.46 inches, significantly thicker than the standard 1-inch grips most golfers are accustomed to. Even the weight was mind-boggling, with DeChambeau’s grips weighing in at a whopping 123 grams, compared to only 52 grams for a regular Golf Pride grip!

He was quick to realize that the total weight of DeChambeau’s club set tips the scales at around 525 grams. That means only golfers with considerable strength and speed can swing them effectively, adding another layer of challenge.

Performance on the Range

Initially, the performance of the 60˚ lob wedge was not what Ferguson hoped for. His launch monitor indicated that the wedge struggled to generate more than 80 yards in carry distance. This drawback may stem from clubhead speed issues, particularly due to the high loft of the club.

However, after overcoming some growing pains, Ferguson found a rhythm with the clubs, especially delighting in the taller stance the one-length setup allows.

Exploring the Irons

The performance of the other clubs surprised him. The 8-iron, in particular, achieved a carry distance of about 180 yards, which is around 20 yards farther than his usual distance with an 8-iron. Interestingly, DeChambeau’s 8-iron, while labeled as such, is more like a 6-iron in terms of length and loft!

The 5-iron was another eye-opener for Ferguson. He experienced massive distance increases, launching carries beyond 225 yards with this club, reaching 200 yards in his usual game.

Accuracy and Self-Correction

Ferguson also appreciated the curved faces of DeChambeau’s irons, as they seemed to enhance his accuracy even when he didn’t hit the ball dead center. This property hinted at a level of *self-correction*, which is a great asset for any golfer aiming to improve.

A Journey Worth Sharing

As he rounded off this fascinating journey, Ferguson was full of gratitude to Avoda Golf for the opportunity to try out DeChambeau’s iconic clubs. He walked away with a newfound respect for the reigning U.S. Open Champion.

Ferguson is set to share highlights of his professional tournament performance with these extraordinary clubs on the Golf Monthly YouTube channel. Fans and aspiring golfers alike can tune in to witness how this brave trial playing with Bryson DeChambeau’s designs unfolds.
