Available Pets at Local Shelters

The following is a summary of adoptable dogs and cats from several government-run animal shelters:

Jacksonville Animal Care and Protective Services

Located at 2020 Forest St., this shelter currently has Glee, a 3-year-old, 58-pound male mixed-breed dog (ID No. A1447163). Glee is a sweet lap dog and is housebroken and crate-trained, knowing several commands such as sit, stay, heel, and paw. Although he takes time to warm up to new people, he loves children and prefers to be the only pet in a home without cats.

Also available is Hero, a 1-year-old male domestic shorthair cat (ID No. A1464747). Found in an empty apartment, Hero is a shy yet snuggly cat who is slowly making friends at the shelter.

Clay County Animal Services

This facility, located at 3984 W. Florida 16 in Green Cove Springs, features Remi, a 1-year-old, 50-pound female mixed-breed dog (ID No. A0058522094). Remi is characterized as calm, adventurous, and a happy-go-lucky dog who enjoys beach days. She is currently house trained but is sensitive to loud noises.

Additionally, Scully, a 5-year-old, 11-pound male domestic shorthair cat (ID No. A0058706423) is seeking a forever home. He may be shy initially but is loyal and loves being petted and cuddled.

St. Johns County Pet Center

Located at 130 N. Stratton Road in St. Augustine, the pet center is home to Josey, a 4-year-old female mixed-breed dog (ID No. 78597) who is affectionate and gentle despite having heartworms. Josey loves playing fetch and has a knack for making those around her feel important.

Benji, an adult male domestic shorthair cat (ID No. 78763), is also available. He has a friendly and independent demeanor and is ideally suited for a home without other pets or children.

Putnam County Animal Services

At 174 County Landfill Road in Palatka, two unique pets are ready for adoption. Franklin is a 2-year-old male Malinois mix who is friendly, affectionate, and house trained. He walks well on a leash but prefers environments without livestock. Lucy, a 10-month-old female Labrador mix, is also available and enjoys the company of other dogs.

Nassau County Animal Services

Located at 86078 License Road in Fernandina Beach, this shelter is currently offering kittens for adoption at local Petco stores and Farm & Tractor Supply locations, providing additional opportunities for residents interested in adopting a young pet.

Background Context on Local Shelters

Animal shelters play a pivotal role in the community by providing care for abandoned and stray animals and facilitating adoptions. Each shelter offers a variety of services, including spaying and neutering, vaccinations, and behavioral training. They also promote responsible pet ownership and encourage residents to consider adoption over purchasing pets from breeders.

Adopting an animal not only provides a loving home to a pet in need but also helps alleviate the overpopulation crisis in shelters. Community engagement through events, volunteers, and adoption drives enhances the welfare of animals and connects citizens with potential furry companions. The shelters encourage people to visit their facilities or follow them on social media for updates on adoptable pets and available services.
