Jacksonville, Florida – Norman Studios, a remarkable site in Jacksonville’s cinematic history, will celebrate its two-year anniversary next month by offering free tours that highlight its significant contributions to film, particularly in promoting African American actors in positive roles. The museum hosts these free tours on the first and third Saturdays of each month from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., with the next scheduled date on July 19.

Norman Studios is recognized as one of the earliest film studios in the nation to feature Black actors in dignified positions. Founded by Richard Norman in 1916, the studio produced numerous silent films showcasing African American talent. Richard Norman, a white filmmaker, significantly changed the landscape of cinema between 1924 and the end of the silent era, focusing on narratives that uplifted and empowered Black individuals in a time when such representations were rare.

The studio complex, located on Arlington Road, includes critical structures such as a production building, wardrobe cottage, generator shed, prop storage, and a set building. Historical productions from the studio, like “The Green Eyed Monster” and “The Flying Ace,” have earned cultural recognition, with “The Flying Ace” being included in the Library of Congress National Film Registry for its significance.

Each open house event at Norman Studios attracts an average of 20 to 25 visitors. Many guests express surprise upon discovering the studio’s pivotal role in Jacksonville’s rich film heritage, which dates back to the city being hailed as America’s “Winter Film Capital.” Volunteer Jim Kerkhoff noted that the studio serves an essential purpose in educating the public about this lesser-known aspect of local history.

Beneath the surface of the studio’s historical value lies personal anecdotes from volunteers such as Jeanne Middleton, who fondly remembers taking dance lessons at the studio in her youth. Middleton’s connection to Richard Norman not only adds a personal layer to the narrative but also emphasizes the enduring importance of preserving Jacksonville’s film legacy, especially regarding the production of race films that tackled themes of equality and representation long before mainstream adoption.

In honor of the studio’s rich legacy and the contributions of local preservationist Rita Reagan, a new set building will be dedicated in her name. A gala ceremony is planned for January 18, featuring performances by the Ritz Chamber Players and attended by Rita’s husband, Harry Reagan, to celebrate her impact on local film heritage.

As a 501(c)3 organization, Norman Studios relies on community support through donations to fund restorations and events. Its mission goes beyond mere preservation; it aims to engage residents and visitors alike in a dialogue about Jacksonville’s once-thriving film industry and the groundbreaking narratives that emerged from Norman Studios.

As the two-year anniversary approaches, Norman Studios continues to play a vital role in connecting the community with its film history, fostering appreciation for the contributions of African American filmmakers, and inspiring future generations to explore the rich tapestry of stories within Jacksonville.
