Jacksonville is set to experience significant traffic impacts starting February 10, 2025, due to a major water main replacement project along San Jose Boulevard. The Jacksonville Electric Authority (JEA) will replace a 24-inch water main in the area, specifically between Old River Road and Claire Lane, which is expected to take approximately three months to complete.
The necessity for this project arose following an emergency repair of a water main break that occurred in July 2024. JEA officials determined that a complete replacement of the damaged pipe was essential to ensure the ongoing reliability of the local water system. This proactive measure aims to prevent future water service outages and avoid additional traffic disruptions in the area.
During the project, motorists should anticipate traffic delays, as one lane will be closed in each direction on San Jose Boulevard between I-295 and Ricky Road. Lane closures will be enforced nightly during specific hours to minimize disruption: one northbound lane will be closed from 8:30 p.m. to 6:30 a.m., while one southbound lane will be closed from 9:00 p.m. to 8:00 a.m. Additionally, median and turn lanes within the work zone will also be closed for the duration of the project.
In light of the construction, speed limits in the vicinity will be reduced to 35 mph to ensure the safety of both workers and motorists. JEA cautioned that traffic lane closures may be subject to change, and further adjustments could include extended or weekend work hours aimed at expediting the project timeline.
It is important to note that this replacement work will not disrupt regular water, sewer, or electric services for customers. Should any planned water outages be necessary during the replacement process, affected customers will receive notifications 48 hours prior to the outage.
JEA encourages residents with questions or concerns about the water main replacement project to reach out via phone at 904-665-7500 or through email at projectoutreach@jea.com. The anticipated completion date for the water main replacement project is projected for May 2025.
This initiative is part of JEA’s commitment to maintaining and improving the infrastructure of Jacksonville’s water system. The organization is dedicated to ensuring that the community has reliable access to essential services while also addressing vital repairs and enhancements when needed.
As the project progresses, the city of Jacksonville aims to keep residents informed and prepared for the changes in traffic conditions during this essential upgrade. Local officials remain focused on ensuring that the impact on daily commuting is minimized as much as possible throughout the construction period.
