Jacksonville, Florida Mourns the Loss of a Local Hero
In a heartfelt moment for the Jacksonville community, we say goodbye to a truly remarkable man, Mike Yeoman, who passed away at the age of 84. Born on May 6, 1939, in Teaneck, New Jersey, Mike was a devoted son to his parents, Roy and Mary Yeoman, and led a life filled with love, service, and dedication. He was not only a loyal patriot who proudly served his country in the United States Navy, but also a cherished husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather.
A Life of Service
Graduating from Tenafly High School, Mike joined the United States Navy in 1959. He committed over two decades of his life to military service with outstanding distinction, ultimately retiring as Chief Petty Officer Radioman (E7). Many may not know, but he served aboard the famous aircraft carrier USS Oriskany during significant events in Vietnam-era naval history, a period where his contributions helped shape the course of the war.
After retiring from military service, Mike smoothly transitioned to a civilian career with Copytronics in Jacksonville, where he worked for 25 years. His industrious spirit didn’t fade after retiring in 2004; he kept busy with a part-time role at Enterprise Rent-A-Car until finally retiring in 2009. It’s clear that Mike exemplified not just dedication in his service to the country, but also in his work career.
A Loving Family Man
In 1960, Mike united his life with Patricia “Pat” Wells, and their marriage thrived for an incredible 64 years. Together they raised a beautiful family, skillfully navigating the ups and downs of life that come with military relocations. This bond grew even stronger as they settled down in Jacksonville, where they created countless memories and cherished experiences.
Mike was a proud father to his daughters, Deborah Sitterson and Lisa Register, as well as his sons, Michael G. Yeoman and Paul Yeoman. The family expanded with the addition of 12 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren, all of whom brought him immense joy. His unwavering love for his family was evident in everything he did, and he took great pride in their successes and happiness.
Passions Beyond the Uniform
Outside of his duties as a veteran and family man, Mike enjoyed activities that brought him joy. Whether it was hitting the golf course, spending weekends at the shooting range, or relaxing in his favorite recliner, Mike embraced life fully. His witty personality was a joy to those around him, and he relished in sharing laughter and good times with family and friends. Mike really knew how to live life to the fullest.
A Ceremony to Honor His Legacy
As we bid farewell to this beloved figure, Mike will be laid to rest with military honors at the Jacksonville National Cemetery. Family and friends are invited to a viewing on Wednesday, July 9th, from 6:00 to 8:00 PM at Corey-Kerlin Funeral Home. The celebration of his life will be held on Thursday, July 10th, at 11:00 AM at the same location, officiated by Rev. Father Matt King, followed by a burial procession at 1:00 PM.
The family expresses profound gratitude to the dedicated employees at The Gables/Harbor Chases of Jacksonville for their exceptional care during Mike’s final days. In lieu of flowers, they request that donations be made to VITAS Hospice, ensuring compassionate care continues for those in need.
Remembering a True Inspiration
Mike Yeoman may be gone, but his legacy as a devoted veteran, loving family man, and a person of remarkable character will live on in the hearts of all who knew him. Indeed, he will be remembered not only for his service but also for the unyielding love he provided to his family. Jacksonville has lost a true hero, but the memories of his life will undoubtedly hold a special place in the community forever.
