These incidents are prompting community calls for enhanced road safety measures.

Jacksonville, Florida – Two separate traffic incidents on the evening of June 20, 2025, resulted in the deaths of a man in his early 20s and a woman in her 70s, highlighting ongoing safety concerns on Jacksonville’s roads. The incidents raised the toll of traffic fatalities in Duval County to 77 for the year.

In the first incident, a woman in her 70s was struck while crossing Blanding Boulevard shortly after 9 p.m. Witnesses reported that she was not using a designated crosswalk and seemed unaware of the approaching traffic when she was hit by a jeep. The jeep driver, who was traveling on Blanding Boulevard, did not sustain any injuries and is currently cooperating with the ongoing investigation. Unfortunately, the woman died at the scene, marking the 77th traffic fatality in Duval County this year.

Earlier that evening, at approximately 7:05 p.m., a man in his early 20s lost his life in a single-vehicle accident on Baymeadows Road. The man was driving a Honda sedan southbound when he lost control of the vehicle. The car veered off the road, crossed the curb, and collided with a tree situated in the median. He was the sole occupant of the car and was pronounced dead at the accident scene. This incident represents the 76th traffic fatality in the county for this year.

Both accidents add to a concerning trend in traffic-related fatalities in Jacksonville. Earlier in May, a tragic incident claimed the lives of a local teacher and his 13-month-old son. As these incidents unveil, community members are increasingly vocal about the need for enhanced road safety measures. Local officials have acknowledged these concerns and are in discussions with the state Department of Transportation regarding possible safety improvements.

Residents and advocacy groups are pushing for specific changes, including the installation of more crosswalks and traffic signals along high-traffic roads like Baymeadows Road. Community leaders emphasize that these improvements could mitigate the risks and improve overall safety for pedestrians and drivers alike.

As Jacksonville continues to grapple with these troubling road safety statistics, the community remains hopeful for effective solutions that will prevent future fatalities and maintain safer roadways for everyone.
