Jacksonville – A motorcycle crash in Northwest Jacksonville on Thursday afternoon resulted in the death of a man and serious injuries to a woman. The accident took place around 6 p.m. at the intersection of Garden Street and Jones Road, marking a tragic event for the local community.

According to preliminary reports, a 60-year-old man was riding his motorcycle east on Garden Street with a 50-year-old female passenger. While they navigated the intersection, an SUV traveling west on Garden Street made a left turn onto Jones Road. This maneuver placed the vehicle directly in the path of the motorcycle, leading to a collision with the passenger side of the SUV.

The impact of the crash threw both the motorcycle driver and passenger from the vehicle. Emergency medical personnel arrived at the scene shortly thereafter, but despite their efforts, the man was pronounced dead at the site of the collision. The woman, in critical condition, was transported to a local hospital for treatment of her severe injuries.

The driver of the SUV remained at the scene and is cooperating fully with law enforcement officials. As a result of the crash, authorities indicated that the intersection was shut down for about an hour to allow for evidence collection and investigation. Preliminary findings suggest that the SUV turned in front of the motorcycle, which had the right of way at the time of the incident.

This motorcycle crash is notable as it marks the 79th traffic fatality in Duval County this year and the 18th involving a motorcyclist. The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office is currently conducting an ongoing investigation. Evidence collected so far indicates that the left-hand turn by the SUV was problematic, according to JSO Sergeant Hungerford, who noted the importance of reviewing video footage and scene evidence during the inquiry.

It was noted that the motorcycle driver was not wearing a helmet at the time of the crash, and it remains unclear whether the passenger had one on. Emphasizing safety, authorities reiterated the crucial need for motorcyclists to wear helmets and to ensure their visibility, especially at intersections where a significant number of motorcycle fatalities occur due to vehicles turning in front of riders.

In light of this incident, motorcycle safety courses are available for interested riders through the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office on their North Campus. These programs aim to educate motorcyclists about safety practices and regulations to help reduce accidents and fatalities on the road.

Motorcycle riders are encouraged to take preventative measures, including wearing protective gear and maintaining awareness of their surroundings while driving. This tragic event serves as a reminder of the importance of road safety and the need for vigilance among all drivers.

The investigation into the circumstances surrounding the crash is still underway, and further updates will be provided as more information emerges regarding this unfortunate incident. The local community mourns the loss of life and hopes for the recovery of the injured passenger as the effects of this tragedy ripple throughout the region.
