A poignant reflection on the effects of substance abuse in communities.
George Sapp, a Jacksonville Beach resident, has been sentenced to two years of community control with electronic monitoring after pleading guilty to drug delivery related to the death of singer Charity Huntley. Sapp’s actions on a boat in April resulted in Huntley’s overdose, although no direct connection was established. The complexities of the case were highlighted in court, as Sapp’s criminal record and character were considered during sentencing. The tragedy reflects broader issues of substance abuse within the community.
Jacksonville – George Sapp, a 42-year-old resident of Jacksonville Beach, has been sentenced to two years of community control with electronic monitoring following the death of 27-year-old singer Charity Huntley in April 2023. Sapp pleaded guilty to the delivery of oxycodone, a charge classified as a second-degree felony, in relation to the incident that led to Huntley’s tragic passing.
The sentencing took place in a Duval County court, where Sapp additionally received three years of drug offender probation, with credit for two days already served. The incident that led to his plea occurred on April 6, 2023, when Sapp allegedly provided Huntley with half a Percocet pill while they were on a boat together. Following this encounter, Huntley was later pronounced dead, with a toxicology report revealing the presence of fentanyl and other substances in her system. However, the medical examiner could not definitively connect her death to the oxycodone given to her by Sapp.
Huntley’s family expressed their disappointment over the sentencing outcome. Faith Andrews, Huntley’s sister, articulated the loss felt by the family, describing Huntley as a beloved advocate who made a significant impact within her community. Mary Huntley, Charity’s mother, shared their grief over not witnessing key milestones in her daughter’s life, like marriage or having children.
The sentencing reflected the complexities of the case, as Judge Tatiana Salvador noted that while the circumstances surrounding the incident were tragic, the law limited her ability to penalize Sapp directly for Huntley’s death. The focus of the sentencing was solely on his offense of drug delivery. Sapp’s defense team portrayed him as a responsible individual with a history of community service; witnesses testified to his character during the hearing.
Throughout the proceedings, the court was informed of Sapp’s criminal records dating back to 2001, which ultimately led to him being adjudicated guilty during this case. Following charity’s death, Sapp was arrested several months later during a drug trafficking investigation, specifically for transporting Huntley’s body to a hospital, where she was pronounced dead upon arrival. Although he was charged with possession to sell, manufacture, or deliver a controlled substance, he currently faces no charges directly related to Huntley’s death.
Investigation details revealed that the medical examiner attributed Huntley’s death to an overdose involving fentanyl, oxycodone, and ethanol. This finding underscores the complexities of the drug epidemic affecting communities and emphasizes the dangers posed by substance abuse. Huntley was a promising talent in singing and dancing, and her family is committed to preserving her memory through ongoing music and advocacy efforts.
In her honor, Charity’s mother, Mary, established the Charity of the Arts Foundation, aimed at supporting local artists and nurturing the arts community. This initiative reflects the family’s desire to keep Charity’s legacy alive while impacting others positively.
As the case concludes, the implications of this tragedy serve as a reminder of the urgent need for continued dialogue and action regarding addiction and the distribution of controlled substances within the community.
