Jacksonville Says Goodbye to a Local Legend: Sovern John Larkins Jr.

It’s a bittersweet day here in Jacksonville, Florida, as we mourn the loss of _Sovern John Larkins Jr._, who passed away peacefully on June 5, 2025, at the impressive age of 96. While the community grieves, the many lives he touched are coming together to celebrate a life well-lived.

Roots in Kentucky

Sovern Larkins, affectionately known as _Jack_ by friends and family, was born on October 19, 1928, on a quaint farmhouse just outside Princeton, Kentucky. Growing up during the challenging times of the Great Depression, he often shared stories that underscored the value of _self-sufficiency_ and community spirit. Jack attended a one-room schoolhouse until the eighth grade before graduating from Butler High School in 1944 at a remarkably young age of 15.

Service to Country

After high school, Jack embarked on a journey that would take him far beyond the borders of his small-town upbringing. He joined the Army and served during the Occupation of Japan, a chapter of his life he fondly chronicled in two detailed scrapbooks. Once his service was complete, Jack returned to the states, finding a new home in Nashville, Tennessee.

An Academic Pursuit

Fuelled by the benefits of the GI Bill, Jack enrolled at Vanderbilt University, juggling his studies, part-time jobs, and a blossoming romance with Betty Gardner. The couple married in 1954 and shared a loving partnership for 69 years until Betty’s passing in 2023, leaving an indelible mark on each other’s lives.

A Career Built on Excellence

Starting his professional journey at IBM selling typewriters, Jack later transitioned into an illustrious career in the securities industry. Over the years, he made a mark at prestigious firms such as Mid-South Securities, J.C. Bradford, R.S. Dickson, Francis I DuPont, Kidder Peabody, and William R. Hough. His leadership capabilities led him to serve as the President of the Florida Security Dealers Association, a role that highlighted his commitment to the industry. An early graduate of the University of North Florida, he also earned his Masters in Business Administration, a testament to his dedication to continuous learning.

A Community Contributor

Beyond his professional achievements, Jack actively contributed to the community. He served on the Board of Directors at _Hope Haven_, a local organization dedicated to helping others. His impact was not just in the boardroom but also felt in the hearts of those he interacted with.

A Man of Many Passions

When he wasn’t working, Jack loved to embrace the great outdoors. His fishing trips, especially shad fishing at Lemon Bluff and Thanksgiving adventures in Sarasota Bay, were some of his favorite pastimes. A proud owner of a boat named the _EBIMBA_, Jack’s affinity for water was rivaled only by his passion for golf. He found joy on the greens at Deerwood Club and Ponte Vedra, and he was an avid walker, frequently taking strolls in his neighborhood and along the beach.

A True Sports Enthusiast

Jack was also a devoted sports fan. Whether cheering for the Vanderbilt Commodores, rooting for the Jacksonville Jaguars, or supporting the Tampa Bay Rays, his enthusiasm was contagious!

Family Legacy

Jack leaves behind his loving daughter, _Lyda Larkins Astrove_, along with her husband Bob, as well as grandsons Billy and Scott Astrove who will undoubtedly carry forward his legacy. The family extends heartfelt thanks to the caregivers at Vicars Landing for their dedicated service, highlighting individuals like Ernestine, Alex, Tara, and Catherine for the compassion they showed.

A Lasting Memory

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made in Jack’s memory to _Hope Haven_, ensuring that his spirit of giving continues to flourish. As Jacksonville grieves this loss, his remarkable life will certainly be celebrated and remembered for years to come.
