Jacksonville

A man in his 50s has died following a hit-and-run incident that occurred on Moncrief Road in Jacksonville, Florida, on Friday night. The man was riding a push scooter when he was struck by two vehicles, with the second driver fleeing the scene.

The crash took place at approximately 8:55 p.m.. According to reports, the first vehicle, driven by an elderly man, was making a left turn into a local business when he struck the scooter rider. The driver allegedly failed to see the man on his scooter, resulting in a significant impact that threw the victim into the roadway.

A second vehicle, characterized as a white SUV, subsequently hit the man also, causing further injuries. After being struck, the victim was quickly transported to a local hospital but succumbed to his injuries shortly after arrival. This tragic event marks the 75th traffic fatality in Duval County for the year 2025.

Following the incident, the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office (JSO) stated that the first driver who made contact with the scooter rider will not face any charges, as it was a tragic accident. However, authorities are currently investigating the circumstances surrounding the second collision. The JSO is actively searching for the driver of the SUV involved in the hit-and-run and has encouraged residents with any information about the incident to contact them at 904-630-0500.

Following the accident, Moncrief Road was closed for approximately one hour to allow investigators to examine the scene and gather evidence.

Background Context

This fatal incident highlights ongoing concerns about road safety for individuals using alternative forms of transportation, such as push scooters, especially in urban areas. As the population of Jacksonville continues to grow, the number of traffic incidents, including pedestrian and scooter accidents, remains alarming.

In Duval County, the number of traffic-related fatalities has seen an upward trend, sparking discussions about the need for improved safety measures and public awareness. Local authorities have been emphasizing the importance of vigilance among drivers, particularly in areas where vulnerable road users, such as scooter riders and pedestrians, frequent the roadways.

With this tragic incident still fresh in the community’s mind, residents are reminded to stay vigilant and have compassion for their fellow travelers on the road.
