Jacksonville Says Goodbye to Thomas Edward Gibbs
In the heart of Jacksonville, the local community is mourning the loss of a cherished figure, Thomas Edward Gibbs, who passed away peacefully at home on May 21, 2025, at the age of 72. Born on May 1, 1953, in Virginia Beach, Virginia, Tommy was the youngest son of Lt. Cmdr. William Thomas Gibbs and Demo Lee Gibbs, who hailed from Leslie, Arkansas. Tommy’s story is one of resilience, commitment, and love for family, friends, and community.
A Lifelong Journey in Jacksonville
Tommy moved to Jacksonville as a small child and would spend his entire life in the vibrant city. After graduating from Robert E. Lee High School in 1971, he attained a degree from the University of Florida in 1975, furthering his education at The Franklin Pierce School of Law, from which he graduated in 1978.
His professional life began at The Charter Company in Jacksonville before he took a significant step in 1986 by opening the Jacksonville office for LeBoeuf, Lamb, Greene & McCrae. His career didn’t stop there; Tommy later held a prominent position as an executive in the insurance industry while continuing to practice law until his last days.
A Deep Connection to the University of Florida
Tommy was a loyal supporter and proud alumnus of the University of Florida. He took on several key roles within the university community, serving as the Chairman of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, a director of the UF Foundation, and a member of the Presidents Council. His dedication to the university emphasized not just his personal aspirations but his commitment to the education and growth of future generations.
Family Life: A Loving Husband and Father
Family was everything to Tommy. He married his first wife, Flo Hope Mason, in October 1984, and later married his second wife, Margaret. Together, they raised a wonderful family in Orange Park and were deeply involved in their children’s education, being ardent supporters of St. Johns Country Day School. Their home at Holly Point was filled with love and laughter, but they moved back to Jacksonville in 2014, seeking to be closer to friends and family.
A Brave Battle Against Cancer
In March 2023, Tommy was diagnosed with metastatic colon cancer. Faced with this daunting challenge, he underwent aggressive treatment at The Mayo Clinic, which allowed him to enjoy an additional two years of life. Throughout this difficult period, he remained engaged with life, working, traveling with his family, and enjoying hobbies like cooking, attending University of Florida sporting events, and enjoying rounds of golf and poker. He approached his illness with a spirit of determination, bolstered by the love and support of his family and friends.
Survivors and Legacy
Tommy is preceded in death by his parents and two older brothers, Phillip and George. He is survived by his first wife, Flo; his second wife, Margaret; four daughters—Katie Schmidt, Anne Clay McNulty, Finley Chacon, and Marleigh Gulliford—and four sons—Mark Wilhelm, Phillip Gibbs, William E. Gibbs, and Walker Gibbs Mason. He also leaves behind several beloved grandchildren and a network of nieces, nephews, and friends who cherished him as a father figure and loyal companion.
Memorial Service Details
Known as a dedicated family man and true friend, Tommy was deeply loved by all who knew him. He held a personal relationship with Jesus Christ, which provided him comfort during his cancer battle. A memorial service celebrating his life will be held on May 30, 2025, at St. Mark’s Episcopal Church, starting at 11:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to be made to the University of Florida Fawbush-Gibbs Endowment in remembrance of his legacy.
