Community Mourns the Passing of Four Beloved Local Figures in Jacksonville Beach

Jacksonville Beach is coming together to honor the lives of four remarkable individuals who have left a lasting impact on the community. Each person brought their own unique charm and spirit, leaving behind memories that will forever be cherished.

Leman Byron Holcombe

First up is Leman Byron Holcombe, who passed away on May 6, 2025, at the age of 74. Born on April 16, 1951, Byron was a proud veteran of the United States Marine Corps, bravely serving in Vietnam. After his military service, he enjoyed a successful career as a chemical engineer, where he was instrumental in creating a variety of formulations. One of his standout achievements was developing pleasant pine scents used in many everyday products.

Byron was more than just a professional; he was an avid supporter of Alabama football, particularly the notorious Crimson Tide. When he wasn’t watching games, he could be found enjoying a good game of golf or relaxing by the water, fishing or camping with family and friends. He is survived by his adoring wife Shirley, stepchildren Kristen Holder and Fred Conley, four loving grandchildren, and two sisters, Stephanie and Lisa.

Family and friends are invited to attend his memorial service on May 10, 2025, at Beaches Chapel in Jacksonville Beach. Following this, Byron will be laid to rest on May 13, 2025, at Beaches Memorial Park, located in Atlantic Beach, FL.

Nicholas Scott Strate

Next, we remember Nicholas Scott Strate, fondly known as Nick. Tragically, Nick passed away from a heart attack on May 5, 2025, at the young age of 46. A product of Atlantic Beach, Florida, he was born on December 3, 1978, and grew up to lead an exciting life filled with passion for his interests. A proud graduate of Stanton College Preparatory School, Nick further pursued higher education at both American University and the University of Florida, where he earned a BA in English.

Nick captivated others with his sharp sense of humor and adventurous spirit. A true music lover, he spent many hours collecting records and sharing his passion with the world. Nick met his wife Kari 14 years ago in New York, and they tied the knot in 2015 before establishing their family in Neptune Beach. He is survived by his loving wife Kari and their two daughters, Goldie and Fiona, who will carry his legacy forward with fond memories of his playful fatherhood and loyalty as a friend.

A celebration of Nick’s life is set to take place on May 15, 2025, at Kathryn Abbey Hanna Park in Jacksonville, where loved ones can reminisce and honor his memory.

Jim C. Smith

Another void in the community is felt with the passing of Jim C. Smith, who left this world on April 12, 2025. Born on September 9, 1933, in Savannah, Georgia, Jim lived a life filled with remarkable experiences. After graduating from Lee High School, he served in the U.S. Army and later attended both the University of Florida and George Washington University Law School. Jim devoted over 25 years of his life to the CIA, working in various international locations that spanned the globe.

Jim is survived by his beloved wife Barbara, along with their sons Steven and Kevin and daughter Nikki. In lieu of a formal memorial service, Jim wished for family and friends to raise a glass in his honor—truly a testament to his vibrant spirit.

Karen McDonough DeLoach

Last but certainly not least, the community is mourning the peaceful loss of Karen McDonough DeLoach, who passed away at her home in Jacksonville on April 25, 2025. Born on December 28, 1951, Karen was a devoted mother and grandmother, always putting family first. She used her talents as a librarian and was also one of the lively Jazzercize instructors in the 1980s.

With a deep faith in Jesus, Karen was actively involved in church activities, imparting her wisdom by teaching Bible school. Loved for her joy and humor, she brought warmth and light to all who knew her. A celebration of Karen’s compassionate life will be held on May 31, 2025, at the Jacksonville Beach Church of Christ.

As Jacksonville Beach comes together to remember and celebrate these incredible lives, the community stands united in gratitude for the impacts they made within our hearts and homes.
