The vehicle unexpectedly veered into the southbound lanes and collided with a Ford F-150 pickup truck, which was stopped in the left turn lane at the intersection of Bayard Street. Immediately after the collision, the Toyota overturned.

Two passengers in the 4Runner, a 15-year-old girl from Fleming Island and a 55-year-old man from Gainesville, sustained serious injuries and were taken to the hospital for treatment. The driver of the Ford F-150, a 47-year-old man from Green Cove Springs, experienced minor injuries.

The Florida Highway Patrol (FHP) is currently investigating the circumstances surrounding the crash, with no additional details released at this time. Authorities have not identified the deceased or the injured individuals until their families have been notified.

This incident is not the only recent traffic fatality in the area. Earlier on May 14, 2025, a 19-year-old man from Jacksonville was fatally struck while walking along US-17. The tragedy unfolded around 8 a.m. when the man entered the northbound lane of traffic. A 57-year-old woman, driving a pickup truck, struck him. The driver remained at the scene and is cooperating with the ongoing FHP investigation.

Emergency responders transported the unnamed pedestrian to a medical facility, where he later succumbed to his injuries. The FHP has reported that traffic lanes were closed during the investigation following this pedestrian accident, highlighting the urgency and severity of traffic safety in the region.
