Snow blankets school buildings in Northeast Florida as winter storm hits
A rare winter storm has swept through Northeast Florida and parts of Southeast Georgia, leading to widespread school closures. The storm, which began on January 22, 2025, left many students at home due to hazardous road conditions. While some schools will reopen as early as January 24, others will remain closed until January 27. Both K-12 and local colleges experienced disruptions, emphasizing the storm’s significant impact on education in the region. Safety concerns over icy conditions are on everyone’s minds, while students eagerly await the return to their classrooms.
In a surprising twist to our usually mild Florida winter, a rare winter storm has rolled through Northeast Florida and parts of Southeast Georgia, leaving many students bundled up at home instead of hitting the books. Yes, you’ve read that right – we got snow and icy conditions that disrupted schools big time!
It all kicked off on Wednesday, January 22, 2025, when most school districts decided it was best to close their doors due to hazardous road conditions. Roadways turned into slippery slopes, making it tricky for buses and cars alike. Reports of heavy snowfall came in from Brantley, Charlton, Glynn, Pierce, and Ware counties, with some areas taking the brunt of winter’s bite.
Some schools, like the ones in Camden County, announced they would remain closed on Thursday but get back into the groove by Friday, January 24. On the other hand, Brantley County schools decided to stay closed on Friday as well, planning to resume operations the following Monday, January 27. Similarly, students in Ware County can expect their break to continue until January 27 due to those persisting icy stretches out there.
Now what about our friends in Glynn County? Well, they will not have classes on Friday; however, staff is expected to report for work from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. As for when classes get back on track, the students will be back in school on January 27. To help make up for the lost days, Glynn County has already set up make-up days on February 17 and March 10. Mark those calendars!
In a more positive light, Charlton County schools will be reopening their doors on Friday, January 24, much to the excitement of students who can’t wait to get back to regular learning.
Meanwhile, over in Nassau County, schools are also ready to welcome students back on Friday, January 24, after braving the winter storm on Wednesday. A boost for students excited to dive back into their studies!
It’s worth noting that many schools in Baker, Bradford, Clay, Columbia, Duval, Putnam, and Union counties managed to resume business as usual on January 23 after a brief break. Even private institutions, such as The Bolles School and Providence School, closed their doors on January 22 but were poised to return to normal after the storm passed.
The impact of the storm wasn’t just limited to K-12 schools. Local colleges like the University of North Florida and Florida State College at Jacksonville also decided to cancel classes on January 22 before bouncing back to action the very next day. College students enjoyed their short snow break just like the rest of us!
In preparation for the storm, most after-school activities were canceled on Tuesday, January 21, right before things got wild with the weather. In particular, the Duval County Public Schools announced their closures on January 22, which meant all athletics and after-school activities were also called off for that day.
While the winter storm has created a beautiful snowy landscape for those who enjoy the sight, it has led to some concerns over slippery road conditions, especially on bridges and overpasses. Safety first, folks! All updates regarding school closures have been actively communicated via school district websites and social media, keeping everyone in the loop during this chilly chaos.
Stay cozy, Northeast Florida! Here’s hoping for some sunshine after all this winter weather.
