FGCU baseball players in a tense moment during their match against Jacksonville University.
Florida Gulf Coast University baseball had a difficult weekend, as they were swept by Jacksonville University, resulting in a disappointing 7-1 loss. Throughout the series, FGCU struggled offensively, managing to score only one run over three games and suffering back-to-back shutouts for the first time in program history. The Eagles left multiple scoring opportunities untapped, but hopeful fans anticipate improvements in their upcoming game against Florida International University.
Jacksonville, Florida – Florida Gulf Coast University (FGCU) baseball faced a challenging weekend as they were swept by Jacksonville University (JU), culminating in a 7-1 loss on Saturday, April 19, 2025. This defeat dropped FGCU’s season record to 15-24 and 6-12 within the Atlantic Sun Conference (ASUN).
The weekend series proved to be particularly difficult for the Eagles, who were outscored a staggering 18-1 over the three games. FGCU’s offensive struggles were evident, as they were shut out in the first game with an 8-0 score and lost the second game 3-0 before managing a single run in the series finale.
FGCU’s only run on Saturday came during the ninth inning, courtesy of an RBI double from Jake Mummau. Prior to this run, FGCU endured a near-scoreless span, failing to generate any offense for 27 consecutive innings across the series. This marked FGCU’s second conference sweep of the season—an unwanted record for a team looking to rebound in the latter part of the season.
The Eagles’ inability to capitalize on scoring opportunities further hampered their efforts in the final game. FGCU left the bases loaded in the fourth inning and stranded runners at second and third in both the fifth and sixth innings. This pattern of missed chances underscored their offensive woes throughout the series.
In terms of performance, the bottom of the batting order showed some signs of life, with players in the eighth and ninth spots contributing half of FGCU’s hits during the Saturday game. Mummau and teammate Jon Embury both stood out with two hits apiece in the series finale, despite the overall struggles of the squad.
This weekend marked the first time in FGCU baseball history that the team had experienced back-to-back shutouts. The statistics highlight how dominant JU was in their pitching and overall gameplay against FGCU during this series.
Despite the setbacks, FGCU will return to action on Tuesday, April 22, hosting Florida International University (FIU) at 2 PM at Swanson Stadium. This midweek contest offers the Eagles a chance to regroup and seek improvement before continuing their conference schedule.
The recent struggles have left FGCU fans and players hopeful that the upcoming match will provide an opportunity to reverse their current form. As the season progresses, the Eagles will look to build momentum and secure more victories to improve their standing in the ASUN Conference.
