FGCU baseball team strategizing during a game against Jacksonville University.
The FGCU Eagles baseball team suffered a disappointing series sweep against Jacksonville University, losing all three games with historic shutout performances. The Eagles failed to score in back-to-back games, ending the series with an overall score of 18-1. Pitcher Evan Dempsey showcased exceptional talent but couldn’t secure a win. FGCU looks to rebound as they prepare to face Florida International University next.
In the sunny city of Fort Myers, Florida, the FGCU Eagles baseball team recently faced a tough weekend as they were swept in a three-game series by the Jacksonville University Dolphins. The sheer excitement of baseball was dampened for fans, as FGCU not only lost all three games, but also suffered some historic shutout losses along the way.
The first game of the series, held on April 18, 2025, ended in a heartbreaking 8-0 defeat for the Eagles. This loss would become increasingly painful as the weekend progressed, with FGCU unable to score a single run in the subsequent game. The second matchup also ended in a 3-0 shutout, marking a troubling first in program history where the Eagles went scoreless in back-to-back games.
This meant that FGCU was left with a total score of 11-0 over the weekend against JU, a scenario that left fans and players alike scratching their heads in disbelief. The Eagles now sit with an overall record of 15-23 and a less-than-stellar 6-11 in Atlantic Sun Conference play.
Despite the disappointing outcomes, not all was lost for FGCU, particularly on the mound. Evan Dempsey was a shining star in the second game, throwing an impressive over 100 pitches in seven innings. He struck out an astounding nine batters while allowing only four hits, along with just one walk. Over his last four conference appearances, Dempsey has showcased his talent brilliantly, striking out 30 batters and giving up only two runs over 26 innings. However, it remains a frustrating reality that he walks away with just one win to show for his efforts.
The challenges weren’t solely on Dempsey, as the Eagles’ bullpen faltered, conceding three runs in the critical eighth inning of game two. This was a crucial moment that ultimately sealed the Eagles’ fate in a game they had a fighting chance to turn around.
Offensively, FGCU struggled to make an impact as evidenced by their combined hit totals: themselves only managing three hits in the first game and four in the second. In game three, the struggles at the plate continued with a final score of 7-1, resulting in a complete series sweep with a harsh scoreline of 18-1 against them during the three-game series.
However, there were some bright spots in the batting order. Jake Mummau’s RBI double in the ninth inning of game three notched the Eagles an important run, while both Mummau and Jon Embury contributed significantly with two hits each in the final matchup. Yet, FGCU repeatedly found themselves leaving runners stranded, failing to capitalize on scoring opportunities throughout the game.
After this challenging series, FGCU has their sights set on redemption as they prepare to host Florida International University (FIU) on April 22, 2025. The game is scheduled for 2 p.m. at Swanson Stadium and promises to be an opportunity for the Eagles to bounce back and reignite their season amidst the adversity they’ve faced recently.
As the Eagles regroup, fans are hopeful to see a resilient squad that thrives on the camaraderie and spirit that FGCU baseball is known for. Here’s to hoping for a better showing in the upcoming match!
