News Summary

The Duval County School Board has approved new boundary changes to accommodate rising enrollment at Chaffee Trail Middle School. The school has exceeded its capacity since opening, resulting in adjustments affecting students at Lakeshore and Westside Middle Schools. The changes, set to take effect in the 2025-2026 school year, aim to manage the anticipated influx of up to 800 new sixth graders and improve resource allocation across the district.

Jacksonville, FL – The Duval County School Board has approved new boundary changes aimed at addressing increasing enrollment numbers at Chaffee Trail Middle School. The adjustments are necessary due to the school exceeding its capacity since it opened in August, prompting immediate modifications to student assignments for the upcoming school years.

Chaffee Trail Middle School currently serves more students than its intended capacity, resulting in the board’s decision to realign the boundaries. The changes will affect not only students enrolled at Chaffee Trail but also those attending Lakeshore Middle and Westside Middle Schools. Shifting boundary lines will facilitate the redistribution of some students from Chaffee Trail to these other middle schools.

Upcoming projections indicate that Chaffee Trail could see an influx of between 600 to 800 new sixth graders next year, which would further strain the school’s resources and facilities. To combat this anticipated surge, the boundary changes are designed to alleviate overcrowding at Chaffee Trail while simultaneously bolstering enrollment at Lakeshore and Westside Middle Schools.

The School Board’s Chairman remarked that the overwhelming enrollment at Chaffee Trail underscores the need for these adjustments, reflecting hopes that well-planned expansions will attract students. School officials predict that Chaffee Trail’s capacity, originally designed for a maximum student body, will drop to 749 students, representing only 76% utilization, by the 2027-28 academic year. Concerns have been raised that the actual enrollment numbers could exceed projections, particularly with current building permits allowing for additional households in the area.

The approved boundary changes are set to take effect beginning with the 2025-2026 school year. Current students who are affected by the new boundaries will have the option to remain at their original schools, with transportation provided during the transition period to ease the process for families.

To expedite implementation and minimize disruption in the scheduling of students, the school board has opted to waive community input meetings that are typically held for such boundary changes. This decision aims to hasten the process while addressing the immediate need for space at Chaffee Trail Middle School.

The changes are envisioned not just as a stopgap measure but also as a strategy for sustainable growth within the district. School officials believe that optimizing the use of under-enrolled facilities is crucial for long-term planning and resource allocation for the school district.

As the educational landscape in Duval County continues to grow and evolve, these boundary changes represent a proactive approach to managing student enrollment and ensuring that all schools are adequately equipped to accommodate their student bodies. The approved adjustments are a step towards maintaining educational quality and accessibility across the district.
