Jacksonville, FL — Ree Crosby Unterspan, a beloved educator and dedicated community volunteer, passed away on June 8, 2025, at the age of 72 after an extended illness. Her passing leaves a significant void in the hearts of family, friends, and those whose lives she touched through her unwavering commitment to education and service.
Born on July 6, 1952, in Alma, Georgia, Ree was the daughter of Willie Otis and Claudine Aldridge Crosby. She grew up in Baxley and Alma, Georgia, where her early years laid the foundation for a life characterized by kindness and generosity. Ree graduated from Bacon County High School, continuing her education at South Georgia State College, and ultimately earning a Bachelor of Arts degree in Theatre Arts and English from the University of West Florida.
On July 19, 1975, Ree married John Alan Unterspan, and the couple welcomed their daughter, Leigh Tuell, in 1977. The family initially lived in Reston, Virginia, but relocated to Jacksonville, Florida, in 1979, where Ree would become deeply involved in her community.
Throughout her life, Ree demonstrated an unwavering commitment to volunteerism. She dedicated numerous hours to organizations such as the Museum of Science and History and The Bolles School, where she worked in the Advancement Office for several years. After retiring, she continued her service by volunteering at Lakewood Church of Jacksonville, teaching Sunday School classes and conducting Bible studies that inspired many.
Known for her enthusiasm for life and her generous spirit, Ree touched everyone around her with her willingness to help others. Her faith in God was a defining aspect of her life; she shared it openly with those she encountered, leaving a lasting impact on her community.
Ree is survived by her daughter, Leigh Tuell; her grandson, Jake Tuell; her sister, Karolyn McKoy; and her niece and nephew, Deena M. Taylor and James M. McKoy Jr. She is preceded in death by her parents and her husband, John.
A celebration of Ree’s life will be held on June 14 at 11:00 a.m. at Lakewood Church of Jacksonville, followed by a reception. A private family burial will take place at Miles Cemetery in Appling County, Georgia. In her honor, memorial contributions may be made to Lakewood Church of Jacksonville.
Ree’s legacy as a devoted educator, community volunteer, and a person of faith will continue to inspire those who knew her and will not be forgotten.
