Celebrating the Life of Jean E. Torrey: A Heartfelt Farewell
PALM BEACH GARDENS, FL – The community is mourning the loss of a truly extraordinary woman, Jean E. Torrey, who passed away on May 3, 2025, at the impressive age of 91. Born on March 6, 1934, in Albion, Michigan, Jean was the beloved daughter of Ralph and Louise (Harris) Brooks.
A Life Rich in Love and Family
Jean graduated from Washington Gardner High School in 1952 and went on to start a remarkable journey when she married Edwin Torrey Jr. just a few months after graduation in September of that same year. This loving couple shared an incredible 57 years of marriage, building a family and a life filled with cherished moments. Jean took immense pride in her roles as a wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, dedicating her life to nurturing those she loved.
A Giving Spirit
The community knew Jean as a caring and giving person. In her early years, she contributed to the local economy by working part-time at the Ladies V&R and the Estelle Shops in downtown Albion. However, it was her commitment to community service that truly set her apart. Jean spent several years volunteering with the American Heart Association, proving that her heart was as big as her impact on those around her.
From Albion to the Sunshine State
In 1975, seeking a warmer climate, the Torrey family made a significant move to Singer Island, Florida. It was here that Jean and Edwin embarked on an entrepreneurial adventure, owning and operating the Tahiti on the Inlet in Palm Beach Shores for an impressive 27 years. Their business was more than a source of income; it was a gathering place for friends, family, and locals alike, showcasing Jean’s warmth and hospitality. The couple also operated several small businesses in the area, cementing their legacy in the community.
Passions and Pastimes
Outside of her business ventures, Jean enjoyed a variety of hobbies that she pursued passionately. In her later years, she spent her time golfing, bowling, and cooking delicious meals for her loved ones. She had a particular fondness for reading, often losing herself in the pages of a good book. Those who knew her would attest to the joy she found in these simple pleasures, reflecting a zest for life that inspired many.
A Family Woman
Throughout her life, Jean remained deeply committed to her family. She and Edwin often delighted in summers spent at their home on Duck Lake, creating lasting memories with relatives and friends. Jean is survived by her three children—Jim (Lisa) Torrey of Duck Lake, MI; Dianne Sudnykovych of Palm Beach Gardens, FL; and David (Cindy) Torrey of Jacksonville, FL. Her legacy continues through her six grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren, who carry her spirit forward into future generations.
A Fond Farewell
Jean was preceded in death by her parents, Ralph and Louise Brooks; her beloved husband, Edwin; and her sister, Donna Rabakon, leaving a void that will be felt by all who knew her. Friends and family are invited to commemorate her life on May 12, 2025. The celebration will begin with visitation at 10:00 AM, followed by a service at 11:00 AM at the J. Kevin Tidd Funeral Home located at 811 Finley Drive in Albion, MI. Following the service, interment will take place at Riverside Cemetery.
