Celebrating the Life of Ann Crovatt Mitchell Streiff in Savannah, GA

In the heartwarming city of Savannah, GA, the legacy of a wonderful woman, Ann Crovatt Mitchell Streiff, is being celebrated as family and friends reflect on her remarkable journey through life. Born on March 15, 1925, to Lawrence W. Crovatt and Stella Crovatt, Ann was the oldest of four siblings. From an early age, she took on the responsibility of guiding her younger siblings, a testament to her caring nature that remained throughout her life.

A Life of Learning and Service

Ann attended several local schools, including Romana Riley Elementary, Henry Street Middle, and graduated from Savannah High School as part of the Class of 1943. Soon after, she began her work at Hunter Air Force Field, where fate would lead her to meet her future husband, Capt. Robert T. Mitchell, who was an Aviation Cadet in the Air Force.

The couple tied the knot on August 10, 1943, in DeRitter, LA, and their love story spanned an impressive 34 years. Once Bob completed his service in World War II in September 1945, the couple settled back in Savannah to start their beautiful family. Their first daughter, Robin, was welcomed into the world shortly thereafter. Over the years, they moved around, with two more daughters, Ann and Carol, born in Houston, TX, and Shreveport, LA, respectively. Ultimately, the family returned to Savannah in 1959, which Ann proudly called home.

Building a Career and Community

With an innate talent for numbers, Ann learned accounting from her father and embraced a career in finance. She managed the finances of Bob’s store, Southeast Georgia Auto Parts & Stereo Tape City, and also worked for prestigious firms like Friedman, Haslam & Weiner and Thimble Square. Ann was a key player in processing payroll for several major grocery chains in Savannah, showcasing her professionalism and devotion to her job.

Following Bob’s passing in 1977, Ann found love again and married Frank Streiff, Jr. in 1979, with whom she shared 20 joyful years.

A Loving Matriarch and Community Leader

Ann’s community spirit shone brightly. As one of the founding families of The Landings Club on Skidaway Island, she played an active role in the community’s development. She was also very involved with the Isle of Hope United Methodist Church and the Skidaway Island Methodist Church. A lover of golf, Ann was a long-time member of the Savannah Yacht Club and played for over 40 years, making her one of Savannah’s first female members of the USGA.

Ann was not only an avid golfer but also a passionate bridge player, a hobby that brought her joy from her teenage years well into her 90s. Known for her extraordinary generosity, she touched the hearts of many and had countless friends throughout her life.

A Culinary Wizard and Devout Reader

Ann’s culinary skills were famed amongst family and friends, especially her delicious tiramisu, biscotti, and chocolate eclairs that had everyone coming back for more. During the holiday season, she prepared mouthwatering sour cream pound cakes and rum cakes, while her homemade wine during scuppernong season was a delightful treat for all. Reading was another cherished hobby, reflecting her thirst for knowledge and adventure.

Family Legacy

Ann is predeceased by her husbands and most of her siblings but leaves behind a loving family that includes her four daughters: Robin Evans, Ann Lott, Carol Russell, and Margaret Costa. She is also the proud grandmother of eight grandchildren, and a host of great-grandchildren, nieces, and nephews, all of whom carry on her vibrant spirit.

Friends and family will gather to honor Ann with a visitation followed by a funeral service on Thursday, April 24th, at 5:00 PM at Hardage-Giddens Chapel Hills Funeral Home in Jacksonville, FL. A graveside service will take place the next day, April 25th, at 2:00 PM at Forest Lawn Memory Gardens Cemetery in Savannah.
