JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — A pedestrian in her early 60s died Saturday night after she was hit by a car while crossing Atlantic Boulevard in Jacksonville, the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office said.
Investigators said she was heading north across the road in the 10000 block of Atlantic Boulevard around 9 p.m., and a silver Infiniti sedan hit her as she crossed. A sergeant with the sheriff’s office Traffic Homicide Unit said at a briefing that she was outside a marked crosswalk at the time.
Firefighters and paramedics from the city’s fire and rescue department arrived and declared her dead on the roadway, so she was never taken to a hospital. The sheriff’s office has not released her name or the name of the driver, and no charges were announced.
Her death was the 131st traffic fatality in Duval County so far this year, and the 32nd to involve a person on foot, according to sheriff’s office figures.
It was the second time in two nights that a pedestrian was killed on the same corridor. A night earlier, on Friday, a driver hit and killed another woman, this one in her 50s, as she tried to walk across the boulevard. The two crashes happened about a day apart, and in both cases the person killed was a woman trying to get across the boulevard after dark.
The Traffic Homicide Unit of the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office is handling the investigation into Saturday’s crash. Sgt. Coffey of that unit pointed out at the briefing that the woman was not using a crosswalk when the Infiniti hit her, a detail the agency also included in its written statement on the death.
