Trade Speculation Surrounds Jaguars’ Star Receiver

Jacksonville Jaguars team discussing trade strategy

News Summary

The Jacksonville Jaguars are in the midst of trade discussions regarding star wide receiver Brian Thomas Jr. Despite his impressive rookie season, Thomas has struggled in 2025, leading to inquiries from other teams. As the trade deadline approaches, the Jaguars are also seeking defensive reinforcements to strengthen their roster while preparing for their next game against the Las Vegas Raiders.

Jacksonville, FL – The Jacksonville Jaguars are at the center of trade deadline speculation as teams inquire about star wide receiver Brian Thomas Jr.. Reports indicate that the Jaguars are currently fielding trade calls for Thomas, but a deal seems unlikely at this stage. Simultaneously, the team is in the market for defensive reinforcements to bolster their roster.

Brian Thomas Jr. had a remarkable rookie season in 2024, leading all rookies in receiving yards with 1,282 yards and touchdowns with 10. His impressive performance ranked him third overall in the NFL for receiving yards. Furthermore, he ranked first among rookies in yards per catch at 14.7, achieving a feat shared by only four other rookies since the 1970 NFL-AFL merger who recorded over 1,200 receiving yards and at least 10 touchdowns.

During the 2024 season, Thomas set a record for the most games with over 75 receiving yards by a rookie, totaling 11 such games and tying for the second-most in the entire league.

However, the 2025 season has seen a notable decline in Thomas’s performance. Over the first seven games, the wide receiver has managed only 27 catches on 55 targets for 365 yards and a single touchdown. His success rate has dropped sharply from 55.6% to 41.8%, while his catch rate fell from 65.4% to 49.1%. Additionally, Thomas’s average yardage per target has fallen from 9.6 to 6.6, and his average yards per game decreased from 75.4 to 52.1.

Notably, Thomas has recorded six drops this season, a significant statistic as it matches the total number of drops reported by nine other NFL teams in 2025. Following a disappointing showing against the Los Angeles Rams, Jaguars head coach Liam Coen emphasized the need for better ball control and placement to help correct Thomas’s struggles.

Brian Thomas Jr. was drafted in the first round of the 2024 draft and quickly emerged as a key player, being named a Pro Bowl alternate and finishing fourth in the voting for the Offensive Rookie of the Year. Currently, he stands as the second-leading receiver on the Jaguars roster, just behind rookie Travis Hunter.

As the Jaguars seek to improve their team dynamics, they hold a record of 4-3 and have already been active in the trade market, including trading for cornerback Greg Newsome II from the Cleveland Browns. The Jaguars are preparing for their next matchup against the Las Vegas Raiders on November 2, just two days ahead of the upcoming trade deadline on November 4.
