Valrico, Florida – Esteemed educator Severia B. Norton, affectionately known as Toni, passed away peacefully at the age of 92 on October 4, 2025. Her death has left a profound sense of loss within the community, especially among her former students and family members.
Toni was born in Jacksonville, Florida, to the late Essie D. McCray Silva and her late stepfather William S. Johnson. She graduated from Old Stanton High School in 1951 and went on to earn a Bachelor of Arts degree in Elementary Education and an Art degree in 1955 from Florida A&M University. After completing her education, she dedicated her professional life to teaching, impacting the lives of countless children in various schools, including George Washington Carver, Rufus E. Payne, and Lake Lucina.
Known for her deep affection for her students, Toni fostered an environment of love and respect, ensuring her students felt valued and inspired. Her teaching career was marked by a commitment to the personal and academic growth of her students.
Along with her teaching career, she was married to the late Eugene Lee Norton, and together they raised two children. Sadly, Toni was preceded in death by her son Kevin Lee Norton and her stepson Joseph McCray Jr.. Despite these losses, she remained a cherished figure in the lives of her remaining family members and friends.
Toni was an active member of the community, devoting her time to Second Missionary Baptist Church and later to Woodlawn Presbyterian Church USA in Jacksonville, Florida. Her passions extended beyond education; she held a deep appreciation for African Art and Black History, frequently immersing herself in cultural events such as jazz festivals. Additionally, she loved to travel, go on cruises, and create jewelry inspired by an African instructor.
Her artistic talents saw her paint, create art from dried flowers, and enjoy various hobbies, including reading autobiographies, visiting museums, and attending Broadway shows. Music was another passion, with Toni particularly enjoying concerts by artists like Diana Ross and Prince. Social gatherings were important to her as well, and she took pleasure in hosting baby showers and participating in the Pride book club led by Marsha Dean.
Toni is survived by her sister, Jolita McCray Wainwright; her daughter, Kerri Lynn Norton Madison (married to Kenneth); and three grandchildren: Ronald Lawson, Faith Elise Norton, and Kourtni Severia Madison. She also leaves behind a host of nieces, nephews, Godchildren, and friends, including Kenneth Yates and her best friend Rosa Exson.
A visitation to honor Toni will take place on October 9, 2025, from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm at Hardage-Giddens, Riverside Memorial Park & Funeral Home in Jacksonville. The funeral service is scheduled for October 10, 2025, at 11:00 am at Woodlawn Presbyterian Church USA in Jacksonville, followed by a committal service at Edgewood Cemetery.
Toni’s remarkable life touched the hearts of many, and she will be deeply missed by all who knew her. Her legacy as an educator, community member, and devoted friend will continue to inspire those she leaves behind.
