Walmart is set to expand its electric vehicle (EV) charging network with the installation of chargers at a fourth Supercenter in Jacksonville. As the city reviews permit applications for this development, the new charging locations aim to enhance accessibility for electric vehicle owners.

The new Walmart Supercenter that will feature the EV chargers is located at 13227 City Square Drive in River City Marketplace, North Jacksonville. The project will involve converting existing parking spaces into dedicated EV parking stalls. The installation will include not just the chargers but also necessary transformers, signage, and various civil site work. The estimated cost for this project is approximately $1.3 million per location.

In addition to the River City Marketplace site, Walmart is currently reviewing EV charging installations at three other Supercenters in the city:

  • 11900 Atlantic Blvd., at the southwest corner of Kernan and Atlantic boulevards in East Arlington/Sandalwood.
  • 10251 Shops Lane, located at the intersection of Interstate 95 and Philips Highway in the Avenues mall area.
  • 6830 Normandy Blvd., positioned east of I-295.

Bowman Consulting Group Ltd. of Alpharetta, Georgia, has been designated as the civil engineer for these projects.

Walmart announced its ambitious plans in April 2023 to build a nationwide network of EV fast chargers across thousands of its Walmart and Sam’s Club stores by 2030. By that time, Walmart had already opened nearly 1,300 EV fast-charging stations at more than 280 locations throughout the United States. The retail giant aims to provide charging options within 10 miles of 90% of U.S. residents, thereby addressing the accessibility challenges faced by EV owners.

As of April 30, 2025, Walmart opened three EV charging locations on a pilot basis, two in Texas and one in Arkansas. Presently, the company’s website lists eight operational charging locations: six in Texas, one in Oklahoma, and one in Arkansas. Additionally, plans are underway for four more stations in Arizona and eight additional locations in Texas.

Customers can easily locate and initiate charging at the EV stations by using the Walmart app, which allows them to scan a QR code available on the charging station. This user-friendly approach is designed to streamline the EV charging experience for customers while shopping.

According to ChargeDevs.com, the new EV chargers introduced by Walmart will complement the existing third-party charging stations already in operation, further enhancing the options available to electric vehicle owners.

The move to expand Walmart’s EV charging network aligns with growing consumer interest in electric vehicles and the ongoing transition to renewable energy. As infrastructure improves, the accessibility of EV charging stations is expected to play a pivotal role in encouraging more drivers to adopt electric vehicles, thereby fostering a more sustainable transportation landscape in the future.
