News Summary

The Florida women’s golf team achieved a commendable second place finish at the Lake Oconee Invitational, scoring +26 and showcasing impressive teamwork. Sophomore Inès Archer notably finished fifth, marking her second top-five finish this spring. The Gators held the lead after two rounds but ultimately fell short to Western Kentucky, who ended up in first place. With two more regular-season events on the horizon, the Gators look forward to continuing their strong performance this spring.

Gators Grab Second Place at Lake Oconee Invitational

This past weekend was a thrilling one for the Florida women’s golf team as they battled it out at the Lake Oconee Invitational. The six-member squad put up a solid fight, finishing in second place with a total score of +26. They were just six strokes shy of the top spot, which went to Western Kentucky with an impressive score of +20.

All Hands on Deck

One standout feature of the tournament was how well the entire team performed. Every single one of the Gators golfers finished within the top 20 of the tournament, showcasing their deep roster and consistent skills on the course. Sophomore Inès Archer was the star of the show for Florida, finishing in fifth place with a score of +5. This marks her second top-five finish in what has been a strong spring season for her.

Initially, Florida seemed on track for victory, holding the lead after two rounds of play. However, their best score came during the third round, where they shot 295 (+7). Unfortunately, Western Kentucky managed to pull off an outstanding final round of 1-under-par, which was the only under-par round recorded during the tournament. This stellar performance allowed them to leapfrog Florida into the top spot.

Tracking the Rounds

On day one, Florida shot 299 (+11), which put them two strokes ahead of Mercer, who finished the day at +13. Freshman Jessica Guiser led the Gators on day one with a solid round at 3-over-par. The second round was equally competitive, with Florida improving their score to 296 (+8). Even though they maintained a two-stroke lead, the pressure from competing teams began to mount.

Sophomore Paula Francisco turned in her best round on day two, finishing at 1-over-par thanks to five birdies that showcased her skill and determination. Meanwhile, Archer experienced a drop in her score, finishing the second round at 4-over-par, causing her to slip from tied for fifth to eighth place. Freshman Siuue Wu, however, made a fantastic comeback, shooting 1-over-par in round two after a rough first round that had her at 7-over-par.

When it came to the final round, the team’s performance really shone through. Archer managed to shoot 1-under-par, becoming the only Gator to finish the day under par. Wu hit an eagle on the challenging eighth hole (a par 5 measuring 471 yards), finishing at +1 for the round. Another notable performance came from Florida’s individual competitor, freshman Elaine Widjaja, who made four birdies, ending her round even.

Looking Ahead

Despite the tough finish this weekend, Florida has had an impressive season overall, achieving seven top-five finishes so far and placing in the top five in every stroke play event they have entered.

The Gators have two more regular-season events coming up in the spring. First up is the Gators Invitational on March 7-9, followed by the Chattanooga Invitational from March 28-30. Fans and golf enthusiasts alike can’t wait to see how the team continues to perform as they gear up for the final stretch of the season!
