JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — A man driving a Volkswagen sedan died early Saturday, Nov. 7, after a westbound Toyota pickup crossed into his lane on Commonwealth Avenue in Jacksonville and struck his car head-on, the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office said.

The collision happened shortly before 4 a.m. near Imeson Road. The force of the hit flipped the pickup onto its passenger side, and the sedan ended up off the edge of the roadway. All lanes of Commonwealth Avenue were shut down at Imeson Road while officers worked the scene.

Medics took the sedan’s driver to an area hospital, and doctors could not save him. The sheriff’s office has not released his name or age while relatives are notified.

The man behind the wheel of the pickup had minor injuries and did not need a hospital trip. He stayed at the scene and is working with investigators, police said. Each vehicle had just one person inside.

Detectives with the sheriff’s Traffic Homicide Unit are trying to learn why the truck drifted across the center line. They are weighing speed, impairment and distraction as possible causes, and checking whether either driver had a seat belt on.

The truck involved was a Toyota Tundra, and the car it hit was a Volkswagen Passat headed east, according to the sheriff’s office account of the wreck. Investigators have not said whether any charges or citations are expected, and the cause remains under review while the traffic homicide detectives finish their work on the scene evidence and statements. The investigation remains open.
