Coastal Flooding, 10-Foot Surf Threaten Jacksonville Into Monday

Waves rolling onto a flat sandy beach

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Jacksonville’s beaches, the Intracoastal Waterway and the St. Johns River face another day of flooding tides and pounding surf Sunday as strong northeast winds keep pushing water toward the coast.

A Coastal Flood Warning covering the Duval County shoreline plus low areas along the river and the Intracoastal stays in effect until 8 p.m. Monday. The National Weather Service in Jacksonville says high tides on top of the wind and rising seas could put water over low roads and property, with moderate to possibly major flooding near each high tide.

Surf is the other big hazard. Breakers that reached about 6 to 7 feet Saturday are forecast to build to 8 to 10 feet Sunday and Monday, and rip current danger is high at every area beach. Major beach erosion is likely around high tide through the weekend and into much of the coming week.

Along the coast, steady winds of 25 to 30 mph are expected through Monday, with gusts often hitting 35 to 45 mph. A gale warning covers Atlantic waters off Northeast Florida through Monday, a poor setup for small boats.

Sunday also brings a chance of scattered showers with a high near 73. Heavier downpours near the coast and the St. Johns River basin would add to the flooding if they hit while the tide is up.

Drier air should move in Tuesday, keeping afternoon highs near 70 to 73 along I-95, though breezy weather and rough surf could linger. Forecasters urge drivers to stay away from barricades and never drive into water of unknown depth, and swimmers to stay out of the ocean.
